The Role of The Pharmacist in HIV Prevention

As pharmacists we are more accessible to patients than other healthcare providers, and our extensive knowledge and training with regards to medications puts is in the PERFECT position to be able to furnish PrEP and PEP to our patients.


PrEP and PEP furnished by pharmacists will increase patient adherence rates; further improving PrEP and PEP outcomes. At the end of this letter are a number of studies that demonstrate the impact of pharmacists in improving adherence and outcomes in people living with HIV.


As pharmacists and Healthcare Providers we are pharmacology experts and highly trained with regards to drug-drug interactions, adverse effects and the kinetics and mechanisms of drugs.

Michelle J. Sherman, RPh, APh FASCP, FACA AAHIVP

Chief Instructor

Michelle Sherman founded MichRx Pharmacist Consulting Services, Inc. in 2005. MichRx Pharmacist Consulting Services is a healthcare and training company providing state of the art Medication Therapy Management (MTM) , Chronic Care Management (CCM) and telehealth consulting with a focus on HIV Care, and associated comorbidities, resulting in improved patient outcomes and decreased healthcare costs.


Ms. Sherman is a nationally recognized HIV Specialist Pharmacist who has practiced in Orange County, California for over twenty five years. She has extensive experience and expertise with HIV medications, adherence and resistance issues, ADAP, CalOptima/Medi-Cal, Medicare Part D issues, 340B Programs, HIV Sensitivity issues, and Advanced Practice Pharmacist Care for HIV infected individuals.


Ms. Sherman obtained her Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from the University of the Witwatersrand School of Pharmacy, Johannesburg, South Africa. She moved to California in 1987 and has been involved in the HIV/AIDS community for over nineteen years. Ms. Sherman is also certified in the following areas: Dyslipidemia from American Pharmaceutical Association and Immunizations from the California Pharmacists Association, and has completed the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists HIV/AIDS Pharmacotherapy Traineeship, and is also a CHEK Holistic Lifestyle Coach and Certified Metabolic Typing Advisor l. Michelle is credentialed by AAHIVM as an HIV Pharmacist and is also has her Advanced Practice Pharmacy license in California.


Ms. Sherman is affiliated with: American Pharmacists Association, California Pharmacists Association, Orange County Pharmacists Association, American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, the American Academy of HIV Medicine, American College of Apothecaries and South African Pharmaceutical Society.
