It’s a GREAT Day at MichRx Pharmacist Consulting Services,Inc. On January 16th (last week) the California State Board of Pharmacy issued the Advanced Practice Pharmacist Licence (APh) to Michelle.

On October 1st, 2013 Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 493 into law. It was this law that recognized pharmacists as healthcare providers in California.  The law stated “pharmacists are health care providers who have the authority to provide health care services.” Since then the State Board of Pharmacy has created a new pharmacy licence, Advanced Practice Pharmacist (APh)  which is coterminous with the primary licence to practice pharmacy.

Advanced Practice Pharmacists are authorized to do the following:

  • Perform patient assessments
  • Order and interpret drug therapy-related tests in coordination with a patient’s primary care provider or diagnosing prescriber to monitor patient progress
  • Refer patients to other health care providers
  • Participate in the evaluation and management of diseases and health conditions in collaboration with other health care providers
  • In accordance with a protocol with a physician or facility, a pharmacist may initiate, adjust, and discontinue drug therapy upon referral from a patient’s treating prescriber when necessary and medically appropriate

Less than 500 APh licences have been issued so far in California and I am VERY proud to be number 462.

The Value of  the pharmacist as a healthcare provider has been proven to improve patient outcomes and has GREAT value to the healthcare continuum, keeping people healthier and decreasing overall healthcare costs, that is why pharmacists must be paid for these services
